P-47D-22 Thunderbolt, 302nd FS/332nd FG, Tuskegee Airmen, Italy, 1944

Aviation Archive Raid on Ploesti collection. For some reason, the size and power of the P-47 comes across in this model more than any other. This is an excellent piece of work, free from major defects, and well worth having.

Something new. Corgi has added a rubber insert over the peg on the stand to keep the model from being scratched. Thank you, Corgi!

Missing part. When I opened the parts bag, I found that one of the two external fuel tanks was missing. Of course, a quick look at the illustration on the box shows that if you have one external tank, you have them all!

Photo note. Notice that the prop is spinning. Hairdryer.

F4U Corsair, Lt. Frederick Streig

Legends of Flight, WWII Aces collection. This is a beautiful model. The paint is superb, the pilot figure colorful, and the landing gear fits and is sturdy. This is a much nicer model than most Legends, and I ended the photo shoot looking for the typical Corgi box, only to remember the plane came in a Legends bubble pack.

That bubble pack. I don't store Legends in their bubble packs because of the danger of paint damage from the mounting screw and the plastic tail support. As for Aviation Archive models, when not displayed, they are stored in the box.

Combat damage. There were a few factory-induced scratches on the tail plane. Otherwise, the model was refreshingly unmarked.

Photo note. The neutral tan-brown background seems to bring out the true color of the model, and I don't know why. I'm going to try the same background again with models painted other colors.

Type Carrier-borne and land-based fighter
